As this is a custom-made replica, please see deadline. Basilosaurus (meaning "king lizard") is a genus of large, prehistoric, predatory whale Archaeoceti from the late Eocene, approximately 41.3 to 33.9 million years ago . First described in 1834, it was the first prehistoric archaeocete whale known to science. The first fossils were discovered along the Gulf Coast of the United States, along with some fossils in the eastern US, assigned to the B. cetoides species type. They were originally thought to be a giant reptile, hence the suffix "-saurus", (Greek "lizard"). It was later discovered that the animal was a primitive marine mammal, which led to attempts to rename the creature, which failed as zoological nomenclature dictates priority to the original name given. Later, fossils of the second species, B. isis , were found in 1904, in North Africa, more specifically the countries of Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco. (Wikipedia)
