Molluscs are a group that has around 85,000 living species . The majority are marine , comprising about 23% of all marine animals , but many molluscs live in freshwater and terrestrial habitats . They are divided into 9 or 10 taxonomic classes, two of which are completely extinct . Cephalopods ( squids , cuttlefish and octopuses ) are among the most neurologically advanced of all “invertebrates”. Gastropods ( snails and slugs ) are, by far, the most numerous mollusks in terms of number of species and account for 80% of the total. There are also bivalves, Monoplacophora (very rare and deep-sea), Escaphopodes, Polyplacophora and Aplacophora. Extinct are the Ammonoids, and some are listed below. The scientific study of living molluscs is called Malacology .
