Brachiopoda is a group of thousands of fossil species, but there are still 120 living species. The group is represented by around 4,500 extinct genera. They are solitary animals, exclusively marine and benthic. The body is enclosed in a shell composed of two valves, similar to bivalve molluscs, however it is not related. The shell, phosphate or carbonated in nature, had a ventral and dorsal valve. Most extinct genera are from the Paleozoic era. They measure between 5 mm and 8 cm, but some fossil species reached 30 cm.
